OK, so we understand this isn’t some sort of contest – the person with the biggest butt wins – but it’s hard to ignore all the buzz around getting a rounder rear. You see it on TV and in magazines, on the runway and the red carpet: the new standard of beauty comes with curves, and it has many women looking for ways to enhance their figures in Beverly Hills. Fat transfer to buttocks, or Brazilian Butt Lift as it has come to be known, is growing in popularity, due to its relative simplicity and happy side-effect of a slimmer waistline, but exactly how much bigger can a fat transfer make you?

Fat Transfer By The Numbers

Technically speaking, there is no predefined limit as to how much fat can be transferred to your buttocks. The main determining factor in this really comes down to how much quality excess fat your body has to give. That said, patients with an abundance of spare fat cells, particularly around the abdomen, love handles, and lower back, are ideally suited to this procedure. Depending on availability, the typical range of fat that can be injected into the buttocks is 200 – 1000 cc per side. Even more important than the volume transferred, though, is how much of the fat survives long term.

How Much of the Transferred Fat Can I Expect to Keep?

Though this can vary from person to person, most patients retain roughly 70% of the transferred fat. The amount of fat remaining 6 months post-procedure is generally felt to be “permanent”. There are, however, a number of things you can do to help maximize survival of the transferred cells:

  • Avoid Sitting: This is actually easier than it sounds – the use of special cushions, combined with sleeping on your side or stomach can help a great deal – and the longer you can avoid sitting after your procedure, the more fat cells will survive (the recommended “no-sitting” period is about 2 weeks).
  • Don’t Rush Back Into Exercise: It takes about 8 weeks for the fat cells to establish sufficient blood supply in their new location, so strenuous, fat burning exercise during this period should be avoided. You can, however, do light aerobic or weight training a few weeks after surgery.
  • Establish a Balanced Routine: The simple rule is if you expend more calories than you take in, you can burn fat, so beyond the 8 week period, getting into a balanced routine of proper diet and exercise will help you maintain your results.
