Both men and women suffer from oversized or prominent ears which can be the source of great stress and social embarrassment. This condition known as prominent ears, can affect about 5% of the entire population. Some patients can hide this condition with alterations in their hair length and hairstyle. Fortunately, there is a surgical solution to this condition called an otoplasty, more commonly referred to as ear pinning. During your consultation at William Bruno Plastic Surgery near West Hollywood and Hollywood, Dr. Bruno can review your unique anatomy and develop a surgical plan based on your needs and desires.

The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia (asleep); however, it can be done under local anesthesia with IV sedation in select cases. The procedure can be done on children, but they should be at least 6 years of age before the surgery is performed. This age corresponds to school age, and the ear is nearly completely developed at this age as well. The surgery lasts from one to two hours, depending upon the specific type of otoplasty performed, and patients go home the same day. The procedure involves removing and re-suturing cartilage, which brings the ear closer to the patient’s head. All the stitches dissolve, and patients can return to work in about three days. It is important to wear a headband while sleeping for the first few weeks to prevent any trauma to the ear.

Most patients are very happy with this procedure as the results are seen fairly instantly. There is some swelling and bruising which takes a few weeks to completely resolve.

Complication rates are quite low. Please feel free to contact our office at (310) 879-0937 to schedule a consultation near West Hollywood and Hollywood with Dr.Bruno.
