The medical term for breast reduction is reduction mammoplasty. This procedure will create smaller, lighter, and shapelier breasts. The reduced size of the breasts is achieved by removing excess fat, breast tissue, and skin. Although they are perceived as sexually attractive by most people, large breasts can cause problems such as neck and back pain and emotional and social anxiety. Women in West Hollywood and Hollywood who undergo a breast reduction with William Bruno Plastic Surgery soon find that they are able to lead an improved, more relaxed life, in addition to enjoying an appealing, more balanced appearance.

General Procedure

There are many techniques used for breast reduction. Typically they involve an incision around the areola and also a vertical incision that extends down to the breast crease. This is called a vertical or short scar breast reduction. This technique is favored by Dr. Bruno as it creates excellent projection and fullness of the breasts while minimizing the scars. It also reduces the amount of tension that is placed on the skin at the time of wound closure during the breast reduction. Some patients who have more excess skin may also need a horizontal component to this which is commonly referred to as an “anchor” incision. A breast reduction differs from a breast lift primarily in the amount of breast tissue removed. You and Dr. Bruno will agree upon the best type of pattern and the approximate bra size you desire during your initial consultation.

Breast reduction can have a major impact on the self-image of the patient. People undergoing this procedure enjoy a less painful life, a more attractive and balanced body, as well as being able to wear more suitable clothes. Better yet, this procedure may be covered by your health insurance, so you should discuss this with Dr. Bruno at the time of the consultation to see if you qualify.

Recovery Process

A surgical bra (with no underwire) is worn for about four weeks. All the stitches will dissolve on their own. Most patients will take pain medication for approximately three days. Since the chest muscles are not involved in this operation, most patients can get back to their usual work routine in roughly three days. Dr. Bruno also recommends silicone sheeting and silicone gels to his breast reduction patients after surgery to minimize visible scars. Patients from West Hollywood and Hollywood are often surprised by how quickly they can return to their usual activities after surgery. A more thorough explanation of the entire recovery process will be provided during your breast reduction consultation.
