Eyelid Surgery Explained

BY DR. BRUNO

While eyelid surgery is targeted and less encompassing than a facelift, it can make a significant impact in your appearance. Over the years, your eyes can begin to look tired or make you appear older because of loose skin, excess fatty deposits (bags) or dark circles. Removing and revising these areas can refresh your appearance and may be combined with other facial surgeries for a more complete rejuvenation.

About Blepharoplasty

Dr. Bruno may perform a blepharoplasty under general anesthesia or under local anesthesia with mild sedation, depending on the patient and the surgery. You may only need a procedure on your upper eyelids, or you may also require lower eyelid surgery. You and Dr. Bruno will discuss these decisions during your pre-operative appointments near Beverly Hills, Hollywood, and West Hollywood.

With the upper eyelids, Dr. Bruno makes an incision within the natural upper eyelid skin crease. This helps to conceal any scars that occur. Typically, the only change that is necessary is to remove loose skin, which can cause heaviness or hooding around the eyes.

Dr. Bruno may approach lower eyelids in one of two ways. If you have excess or loose skin, he makes a small incision just underneath the eyelash line. If your eyes are baggy or if the issue is excessive fat, he makes a small incision on the inside portion of the eyelid. The latter approach leaves no external scars at all.

Results And Recovery From Blepharoplasty

Patients can expect their procedure to last from between one and three hours depending on the technique Dr. Bruno uses. Following surgery, patients will visit with him regularly to track their recovery and so that Dr. Bruno can respond to any concerns they may have.

Most patients experience some swelling and bruising over the seven days following surgery. Dr. Bruno recommends frequent icing of the area and keeping the head elevated to minimize these effects.

Patients generally stay off from work for about one week due to swelling and bruising. Dr. Bruno may recommend that you take Arnica, a homeopathic medication, which can significantly reduce the swelling. Following blepharoplasty, you can expect to be on pain medication for about three days and will need to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity for about two weeks.

The results of your surgery will be evident once the swelling has gone down. Successful surgical outcomes provide patients with more alert, rested-looking eyes and an overall rejuvenated appearance.
