Dr. William Bruno is a board certified plastic surgeon supporting patients throughout Los Angeles and Beverly Hills. Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck surgery) is one of the most frequent procedures that he performs, along with breast augmentation, facial surgery, and Los Angeles butt augmentation.

Through medical consultations before surgery, patients have the opportunity to ask questions about abdominoplasty and to get the information that they need to make an informed decision. If you are considering a tummy tuck, we invite you to explore answers to common questions below and then to connect with William Bruno Plastic Surgery.

Can I Lose Weight After Having An Abdominoplasty?

If you’re considering plastic surgery, it’s only natural that you’re thinking about other changes to your appearance. It’s important to know, however, that Beverly Hills abdominoplasty patients should be at or close to their ideal body weight before having a tummy tuck.

Abdominoplasty procedures target loose skin and stretch marks, which are usually the result of pregnancy or major weight loss. In the procedure, Dr. Bruno removes this loose skin. He also strengthens the underlying abdominal muscles so that the abdomen is firmer and more sculpted.

If you are planning to lose a lot of weight, it’s better to shed this weight before—and not after—a tummy tuck. Otherwise, you may compromise the results of your surgery because the skin, which has already been revised once, can become loose again. If you are expecting to lose a significant amount of weight, discuss your plans with Dr. Bruno during your abdominoplasty consultation.

Can I Get Pregnant After An Abdominoplasty?

This question is similar to the concerns about weight loss after a tummy tuck. Beverly Hills abdominoplasty patients are generally advised not to become pregnant after the surgery.

The reason has less to do with a risk to you or your baby if you do become pregnant. Instead, the concern is that the abdominal skin will stretch again throughout your pregnancy, and you may not be happy with your final abdominal contour.

When Can I Begin Exercising After An Abdominoplasty?

Every patient has different needs and tolerances. Some patients become more comfortable with physical activity earlier in their recovery, just as some are able to manage their pain with less medication.

In general, though, most of our Beverly Hills abdominoplasty patients can resume light aerobic activity around two weeks after surgery. This might include brisk walks on a treadmill, using an elliptical machine, or riding a stationary bicycle. All patients are encouraged to begin walking the day of the surgery.

Regardless of your tolerance for exercise, you should avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting for four to six weeks after your tummy tuck so that your recovery can continue on a safe, normal track. Dr. Bruno can talk about this in more detail at the time of your consultation.
