What is a brachioplasty?  Somebody was talking about it on this site, and I don’t know what it means.

A: Brachioplasty or Arm Lift

A brachioplasty is an arm lift. This may involve removal of skin alone or in combination with liposuction to remove additional fatty tissue. There are several different types of arm lifts depending on the amount of excess skin and/or fat that needs to be addressed.

Typically, the incision extends from the inner aspect of the elbow and extends to the armpit. In some cases where patients have less extra skin, an incision entirely within the armpit crease is all that is required. Whether or not liposuction is indicated is something your plastic surgeon will determine after examining your arms. The optimal time to have this type of surgery is when your overall body weight is relatively stable. The scar is located on the inner portion of your arm and is not easily visible when your arms are down at your sides. However, the scars from this surgery may take longer to heal and to fade compared to scars on other areas of the body.

To determine which approach is best suited for your particular anatomy, consult with a board certified plastic surgeon.
