How do I know if a tummy tuck is a good option for me?
A: Who would benefit from a tummy tuck?
A tummy tuck is performed in patients who have a weakened abdominal wall (from pregnancy or weight fluctuations), loose skin and/or stretch marks. The best time to have a tummy tuck is when your weight is stable and you do not plan to have any more children. Although you can become pregnant after a tummy tuck, the pregnancy itself will stretch your skin and ultimately compromise the tight result you obtained the day of surgery.
If you have loose skin of your lower abdominal area and most of your excess fat deposits are in this area, then you may be a good candidate for this procedure. The loose skin needs to be surgically removed and ,unfortunately, will not respond to diet and exercise (sit-ups) alone. Some patients also need liposuction of their love-handle area to further enhance the overall look of their torso/abdomen.
Depending on your specific situation, you may need medical clearance from your primary care physician prior to surgery. This is something your plastic surgeon will discuss with you.
