Look for certification.

For example, in theUnited StatesandCanada, look for someone who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Look for a doctor with the right credentials.

One of these is affiliation with a group that has a set of standards the doctors must meet. Ask your doctor if he or she is affiliated with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Another thing to look for is the type of facilities where the doctor operates. Make sure he or she operates only in hospitals or accredited surgical facilities.

Look for a doctor who has specialized in the type of procedure you are having done, and has for a number of years.

Ask how many times a week the doctor does this type of procedure. Ask what type of continuing education (CME) your doctor has pursued in this area.

Avoid doctors who talk about deals or specials.

Get quotes from a variety of doctors. If one doctor’s price is much lower that the others, be suspicious.

Look for a doctor who spends time with you, asking questions about your expectations and finances.

Look for a doctor who explains the potential risks for your procedure and what will be done to reduce those risks. Look for a doctor who explains what the recovery time will be for your procedure. Ask to see before and after photos of patients.
