The dreaded lower abdominal bulge – in your youth, it’s easy to shrug the idea off and say it won’t happen to you, but then it happens. Whether due to weight loss, pregnancy, or just genetics, you try to beat it with diet and exercise, but you just end up feeling frustrated and defeated.

The good news is you don’t have to simply accept it as an inevitable part of getting older! Beverly Hills tummy tuck patients just like you have gone through the very same struggle before admitting they need help. Once you do, all you really need is to understand your goals and which procedures that can help you achieve them.

A Common Misconception

Many people, surgeons included, have developed a bad habit of using the terms “tummy tuck” and liposuction somewhat interchangeably because they often address the same area of the body – the waistline. Though Liposuction is not, by definition, included in a tummy tuck, it is very frequently performed at the same time. Here’s an example of how this is typically done:

  • A tummy tuck procedure is begun with an incision from hip to hip just above the pubic bone
  • Excess skin is removed from the abdominal area
  • Special sutures are used to add strength and stability to the abdominal muscles
  • Liposuction is performed to remove excess fat from the abdomen and love handle areas
  • The belly button is repositioned to give it a natural appearance on the new, flatter abdomen

Often, patients with excess skin to remove in the abdomen also have excess fat in the same area, so it is very common for a tummy tuck and liposuction to be performed together. It is important to note, though, that, if you don’t have excess skin in the area and your skin tone is still good, simply getting liposuction is probably a better choice, as it won’t require the same size of incision.
