Patients often ask if they have to replace their breast implants every ten years. This is not true. You do not have to replace your breast implants every ten years. The main reason to exchange breast implants is because of a patient’s desire to change the size- usually to go bigger in size. Another common reason to change breast implants would be due to excess scar tissue formation around the implants, this is known as capsular contracture. This occurs in up to 15% of all patients who have breast augmentation surgery. Another reason to exchange breast implants is due to a leak or rupture, which happens more commonly with saline implants compared to silicone breast implants. The chance of the implants rupturing within ten years ranges from 5-15% depending on the type of implant used.
