Silicone and Saline Breast Implants

Are silicone breasts implants FDA approved? is often thought of as the breast implant epicenter. Even still, patients are understandably concerned about the safety of the breast augmentation procedure and the products that we use during it. Here is a quick breakdown of the FDA approval process of each of the different types of breast implants. Beverly Hills patients can also give us a call to learn more about the specific brands of breast implant we use.

  • Saline – These implants are the oldest of the breast implant types. They received official approval by the FDA in 2000. They come shipped from the manufacturer in a deflated state. The surgeon will then roll them up and insert them into the breast pocket. Once they are in place they can be filled with the desired volume of saline solution.
  • Silicone gel – These implants had their FDA-approval temporarily revoked in 1992. But the FDA reapproved them for use in 2006. They also use a silicone shell but come pre-filled from the manufacturer with a thicker silicone gel. Many Beverly Hills patients prefer this type of implant because it gives a more natural feel.
  • Gummy bear implants – Technically known as “cohesive gel” implants, these are quickly becoming the most popular They have a thicker shell but patients believe the material inside delivers an even more natural feel. They received FDA approval in 2013.
