Liposuction of the chin/neck area, also called submental liposuction, can have a profound effect on a patient's appearance; especially their profile. This can be a difficult area for patients to lose fat due to a genetic predisposition that some people have despite strict diet and exercise. The "double chin" appearance can often be seen in patients who are not necessarily overweight. This deposit of fat can create an older looking profile and can also contribute to a "weak chin" contour.
The procedure involves a small incision just under the chin to allow access for the liposuction cannula. Occasionally an extra incision behind the earlobe is also indicated to give a sharper appearing jawline. This can be done under general anesthesia or under local anesthesia with sedation. Patients need to wear a chinstrap garment for a few weeks after the surgery at night and while sleeping. This garment helps to ensure a smooth, contour and assists with reduction of swelling.
