Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) View Photos

Eyelid surgery (known as blepharoplasty) is a corrective procedure that can reduce dark circles or “bags” under the eyes, remove excess wrinkles, and provide a more youthful appearance to the eyes.  One of the first things noticed about a person is their eyes.  During the aging process, wrinkles, lines, and puffiness contribute to a tired or aged appearance.  The blepharoplasty surgery is often performed in conjunction with other facial procedures such as a face lift or rhinoplasty (nose surgery).

Reasons for Considering Eyelid Surgery:

  • Dark circles or bags under the eyes.
  • Excessive skin or wrinkles surrounding the eyelids.
  • A tired appearance or puffiness due to inherited factors.

General Procedure

To address the upper eyelids, a small incision is made within the natural crease of the upper eyelid and skin and/or fat is removed; depending on the patient's specific needs.

To address the lower eyelids, there are two options.  If a patient has excess skin, then a small incision is made just beneath the eyelash line to remove the loose skin and/or reposition the excess fat.  If the patient has good skin tone of the lower eyelid but has bulging fat, then an incision is made on the inside portion of the lower eyelid (no visible scar) to either remove or reposition the lower eyelid fat deposits.  Each patient has unique anatomy and needs, which Dr. Bruno will be able to evaluate during your consultation.

The surgery generally takes about one to three hours and is performed in the physician’s office.  If additional cosmetic procedures are being performed, the eyelid surgery could last longer.

Recovery Process

Patients may report minor pain associated with surgery which can be treated with oral medication (Vicodin), for about two to three days. Patients are instructed to ice the area for the first 24-48hrs.  Patients will have a more rested and youthful appearance.  Most patients will have some visible bruising and therefore take about one week off of school or work.  Most swelling and bruising resolves within one week.
